In the early 1900s, William A. Buckner worked as a railroad trainmaster in Fresno, California.  Motivated by the lush, green grasses of the irrigated agricultural lands in Central Valley California, Buckner recognized the impact and importance of sprinklers.

After long work days at the railroad, Buckner worked in his workshop after hours and on weekends to engineer a slow-rotation sprinkler head for large turf areas.  By 1912, his work was complete and his sprinkler was patented.

Not long after the completion of his project, a group of engineers from San Francisco were in the process of designing a hoseless sprinkler irrigation system for a golf course near Monterey.  Inventors at the time were working to make golf courses more accessible in the off seasons and rainfall shortages.  Buckner’s sprinkler happened to be perfect for golf course irrigation.  They reached out to him for the inclusion of his sprinkler, in the project.

After accepting the contract, Buckner had now officially entered the sprinkler irrigation industry.  He was now responsible for supplying the sprinklers for the first hoseless golf course irrigation system for Pebble Beach Golf Course.

While holding his position as dispatcher for the Santa Fe Railroad, Buckner continued down the road of irrigation.  He contracted with a manufacturing company in Fresno, California, and added new members to his team including a new partner, Harry E. Cleason.

In the 1950s, Buckner stepped into the spotlight once again with its involvement in the first automated golf course sprinkler irrigation system.  Buckner was responsible for producing all of the components for this new automated system.

Throughout the years, Buckner has developed many substantial products including the hose swivel, quick-coupling valve, and sand resistant bearing, all of which are still made today.
