A Southern California city recently converted their municipal irrigation systems from potable water to recycled water. After several months, they noticed that an abnormally high number of valves were experiencing performance issues and failures.
While investigating the problem, the city noticed that the diaphragms inside the valves were showing premature wear, leading to increased failure rates. The recently installed recycled water system utilizes a chemical treatment process for sterilization that includes high levels of chloramines.
After testing, it was determined that the existing diaphragm materials were not able to withstand exposure to the chloramines present in the system.
